Coronavirus in India: Bengaluru Company Makes Portable Ventilators

Gautham Pasupuleti, CEO and Managing Director told India Today TV that the device can come in handy when there aren’t enough ventilators and a patient requires one urgently.

The absence of adequate number of ventilators is adding to the woes amid Coronavirus crisis in India. The Centre, as well as state governments, have placed orders for thousands of ventilators to treat patients suffering from Covid-19. But while those ventilators may take time to be delivered, the only solution is to have a device that can save lives.

Biodesign Innovation Labs, based in Bengaluru, has a device that fits the bill. Called RespirAID, the portable ventilator is a low-cost device that can stabilise the patient during a respiratory arrest by mechanically providing intermittent positive pressure ventilation at specific desired ventilator parameters.

Gautham Pasupuleti, CEO and Managing Director told India Today TV that the device can come in handy when there aren’t enough ventilators and a patient requires one urgently.

He, however, added that RespirAID cannot replace a high-end mechanical ventilator but is basically an emergency ventilator that can save lives.

His device can replace the bag valve mask devices that doctors use in an emergency but without the after-effects that sometimes leads to mortality and morbidity. Gautham said that this device can run on a battery for 2-3 hours but for a maximum of 2 days in the ICU when normal ventilators are not available.

At the moment, he is trying to mass manufacture the device so it can reach millions of people across the nation but for that his company has approached Indian industry.

“We have reached out to industry folks who are willing to partner with us on a non-exclusive basis so we can make tens of thousands of the device to save lives,” he added.
